Perinatal & Infant Mortality Committee

What We Do

The INAAP Perinatal Mortality Committee is dedicated to lowering Indiana’s perinatal and infant mortality rate by:

  1. Providing an active, organized voice that promotes best practice to reduce perinatal and infant morbidity and mortality
  2. Collaborating with statewide efforts and organizations to reduce perinatal and infant mortality
  3. Sponsoring legislative efforts to reduce perinatal and infant mortality

The INAAP Perinatal and Infant Mortality Committee has chosen three important objectives to focus our efforts:

Objective 1: Improve Indiana’s exclusive breastfeeding rate by providing education and resources for pediatric providers and families

Activities and Outcomes

  • ­Collaboration with ISDH, Indiana Perinatal Network to produce EPIC Breastfeeding Training for Physicians
  • ­Education for newborn medical providers statewide through live conferences
  • ­Website resources
  • ­Billing resources
  • ­Breastfeeding resource/tip “tweet of the week”
  • ­MOC

Objective 2: Improve safe sleep practices in the community and at hospitals in the state of Indiana

Activities and Outcomes

  • ­ Committee members serving on IPQIC Safe Sleep Committee
  • ­ Collaborating with ISDH on Baby Box Safe Sleep Proposal ­ Crib for Kids
  • ­ Legislation to remove baby bumpers from stores
    • Outcome: INAAP involvement endorsing a statewide safe sleep policy for hospitals
    • Advertising on website Crib‐for‐Kids contact information by county and resources
    • Goal to have legislature sponsorship by the end of the year
    • Initiate twitter storm

Objective 3: Improve rates of appropriate newborn follow‐up in the community

Activities and Outcomes

  • ­ Quality Improvement project to improve rates through Riley Physician Network
  • ­ Presentation of idea, literature at Riley Child Care Conference ­ Healthy Beginnings campaign:
    • Distribute recommendations
    • Twitter storm
    • Tweet of the week
  • ­ Collaborating with Nurse Family Partnership
    • INAAP involvement with education about this program
    • INAAP to help facilitate collaboration between NFP and primary pediatric providers
